The working principle of commercial oil-water separators is mainly based on the density and physicochemical differences between oil and water. Common oil-water separation technologies include gravity separation, centrifugal separation, filtration separation, and electrostatic separation. Among these, gravity separation is the most traditional and widely used method. It utilizes the density difference between oil and water, causing them to naturally separate into layers under the influence of gravity, thus achieving initial oil-water separation. More efficient separators may combine multiple separation technologies, such as first removing most of the grease through gravity separation, and then further purifying the water through filtration or centrifugation.
